NOTES:  It is believed that Joseph's father was born in Ireland. We are looking for who his parents were. Joseph's obituary says he moved to Dubuque with his parents when he was 12 (abt. 1841 or 1842). However, the people he is living with in the 1850 census in Dubuque are Amos (a plasterer) and Adeline Mathews and family. Adeline is too young to be his mother (only 34). The only other information we have is that he was a "bound boy" - which the family believes is an apprentice. Joseph became a "plasterer." The census also shows a Mary J. Rice, age 13, whom we believe to be his sister.
