NOTES:

William H. Martin lived with his family in Meridian, Butler Township. I can

not find a William H. Martin in the 1850 Butler County census. He is also

absent from the 1860 census, though his wife, Eliza, and eldest daughters

were living with a brother-in-law at that time. William appears in the 1870

and 1880 censuses with his family. He owned property in Butler Township and

appears on the 1874 township map. By 1900 he lived in Pittsburgh with his

wife and youngest son. I have found neither a birth nor death record for

William H. Martin. I do know that he was alive when his wife died in 1901,

but he is not buried with her. All census records show his parents were born

in Ireland, but I do not have their names. I am not sure if William was born

in Butler County or settled there from somewhere else. The "H" could have

stood for Henry, as it did for his son, and he may have been born Henry

William Martin. I have been trying to connect him with the large, Irish

Martin family in Connoquenessing Township, but with no luck so far. There are

a few William H. Martin's in the Butler County Civil War records, but I have

no proof that any of them are my William H. Martin.
